The RYA First Aid course is a 3 year qualification designed to fulfill the requirements of the MCA Code of practice for skippers and small commercial vessels and all RYA Practical instructors.
The duration of the course is 8 hours and all candidates are supplied with a current addition Red Cross/St John first aid manual.
Course objectives, by the end of the course all candidates should be able to
Perform CPR to current protocols
Understand the diferential for drowning
Recovery position for confined spaces
Direct pressure on a wound to control bleeding
Recognise Shock and treat it with special reference to internal and external bleeding
Manage cold shock and hypothermia in immmersion and or exposure
Recogonise head injuries and levels of response and be aware of breathing difficulties
Chest pain, sea sickness, diabetic emergencies, anaphylaxis, hyperthermia, fractures, seizures and burns.
Choose suitable first equipment for their boat and understand how to get medical advise by radio and prepare evacuation by helicopter.
Skippers of MCA coded vessels only be aware of contents of and use of cat "C" First Aid kit including the pocket mask
